Gender Differences in Cisgender Psychologists’ and Trainees’ Attitudes Toward Transgender People
Post print (author accepted) manuscript made available in accordance with publisher copyright policy. 'This article may not exactly replicate the final version published in the APA journal. It is not the copy of record.'Research that has explored the attitudes of cisgender people toward transgender people has identified gender differences, with cisgender men commonly reporting more negative attitudes than cisgender women. However, little research has explored whether such differences exist among mental health professionals. This brief report outlines findings from 3 studies focusing on attitudes toward transgender people among 3 samples of Australian cisgender psychologists or psychology trainees. The first explored attitudes toward transgender people among psychology undergraduates in an Australian university. The second 2 explored attitudes toward transgender people among Australian mental health-care professionals (with the specific focus of this brief report being upon participants in each study who were psychologists). The findings from each study suggest that cisgender men reported more negative attitudes than did cisgender women. This brief report concludes by considering the broader context that potentially shapes cisgender men’s attitudes and advocates for further research that examines the impact of gender ideology upon attitudes and awareness raising so as to improve service outcomes for transgender people

Effect of Vascepa (icosapent ethyl) on progression of coronary atherosclerosis in patients with elevated triglycerides (200-499 mg/dL) on statin therapy: Rationale and design of the EVAPORATE study.
Despite reducing progression and promoting regression of coronary atherosclerosis, statin therapy does not fully address residual cardiovascular (CV) risk. High-purity eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) added to a statin has been shown to reduce CV events and induce regression of coronary atherosclerosis in imaging studies; however, data are from Japanese populations without high triglyceride (TG) levels and baseline EPA serum levels greater than those in North American populations. Icosapent ethyl is a high-purity prescription EPA ethyl ester approved at 4 g/d as an adjunct to diet to reduce TG levels in adults with TG levels >499 mg/dL. The objective of the randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled EVAPORATE study is to evaluate the effects of icosapent ethyl 4 g/d on atherosclerotic plaque in a North American population of statin-treated patients with coronary atherosclerosis, TG levels of 200 to 499 mg/dL, and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels of 40 to 115 mg/dL. The primary endpoint is change in low-attenuation plaque volume measured by multidetector computed tomography angiography. Secondary endpoints include incident plaque rates; quantitative changes in different plaque types and morphology; changes in markers of inflammation, lipids, and lipoproteins; and the relationship between these changes and plaque burden and/or plaque vulnerability. Approximately 80 patients will be followed for 9 to 18 months. The clinical implications of icosapent ethyl 4 g/d treatment added to statin therapy on CV endpoints are being evaluated in the large CV outcomes study REDUCE-IT. EVAPORATE will provide important imaging-derived data that may add relevance to the clinically derived outcomes from REDUCE-IT
The White Dwarfs within 25 Parsecs of the Sun: Kinematics and Spectroscopic Subtypes
We present the fractional distribution of spectroscopic subtypes, range and
distribution of surface temperatures, and kinematical properties of the white
dwarfs within 25pc of the sun. There is no convincing evidence of halo white
dwarfs in the total 25 pc sample of 224 white dwarfs. There is also little to
suggest the presence of genuine thick disk subcomponent members within 25
parsecs. It appears that the entire 25 pc sample likely belong to the thin
disk. We also find no significant kinematic differences with respect to
spectroscopic subtypes. The total DA to non-DA ratio of the 25 pc sample is
1.8, a manifestation of deepening envelope convection which transforms DA stars
with sufficiently thin H surface layers into non-DAs. We compare this ratio
with the results of other studies. We find that at least 11% of the white
dwarfs within 25 parsecs of the sun (the DAZ and DZ stars) have photospheric
metals that likely originate from accretion of circumstellar material (debris
disks) around them. If this interpretation is correct, then it suggests the
possibility that a similar percentage have planets, asteroid-like bodies or
debris disks orbiting them. Our volume-limited sample reveals a pileup of DC
white dwarfs at the well-known cutoff in DQ white dwarfs at Tef about 6000K.
Mindful of small number statistics, we speculate on its possible evolutionary
significance. We find that the incidence of magnetic white dwarfs in the 25 pc
sample is at least 8%, in our volume-limited sample, dominated by cool white
dwarfs. We derive approximate formation rates of DB and DQ degenerates and
present a preliminary test of the evolutionary scenario that all cooling DB
stars become DQ white dwarfs via helium convective dredge-up with the diffusion
tail of carbon extending upward from their cores.Comment: Accepted for publication in The Astronomical Journa
Dwarf Novae with Newly Determined Parallaxes: Model Analyses of VY Aquari, RU Pegasi, and T Leonis
Using newly determined parallaxes for dwarf novae, we have derived outburst
accretion rates for VY Aqr, RU Peg and T Leo and for T Leo during quiescence.
The two short-period dwarf novae, VY Aqr and T Leo, show good agreement with
optically thick steady-state accretion disks in outburst, whereas RU Peg shows
a significant departure from a steady-state disk. We have determined that the
white dwarf in T Leo has T K, a value consistent with
long term compressional heating when gravitational wave emission drives mass
transfer. The white dwarf in T Leo has a temperature in the same narrow range
as other WZ Sge-like dwarf novae.Comment: The paper will apear in the October, 2004 issue of PAS
Shortest Path Computation with No Information Leakage
Shortest path computation is one of the most common queries in location-based
services (LBSs). Although particularly useful, such queries raise serious
privacy concerns. Exposing to a (potentially untrusted) LBS the client's
position and her destination may reveal personal information, such as social
habits, health condition, shopping preferences, lifestyle choices, etc. The
only existing method for privacy-preserving shortest path computation follows
the obfuscation paradigm; it prevents the LBS from inferring the source and
destination of the query with a probability higher than a threshold. This
implies, however, that the LBS still deduces some information (albeit not
exact) about the client's location and her destination. In this paper we aim at
strong privacy, where the adversary learns nothing about the shortest path
query. We achieve this via established private information retrieval
techniques, which we treat as black-box building blocks. Experiments on real,
large-scale road networks assess the practicality of our schemes.Comment: VLDB201
Ultraviolet observations of LMC nova 1988
The IUE obtained ultraviolet spectra of a nova in an external galaxy. The spectral features do not seem unusual for a nova at maximum but it is hoped to be able to follow it for a long enough time to be able to study the high ionization lines that appear when the density drops to lower values (the nebular stage). A high dispersion spectrum was also obtained to assist in the line identification and to study the line of sight to the LMC 1 deg of arc away from SN 1987A
Composite Accretion Disk and White Dwarf Photosphere Analyses of the FUSE and HST Observations of EY Cygni
We explore the origin of FUSE and HST STIS far UV spectra of the dwarf nova,
EY Cyg, during its quiescence using \emph{combined} high gravity photosphere
and accretion disk models as well as model accretion belts. The best-fitting
single temperature white dwarf model to the FUSE plus HST STIS spectrum of EY
Cygni has TK, log , with an Si abundance of 0.1 x
solar and C abundance of 0.2 x solar but the distance is only 301 pc. The
best-fitting composite model consists of white dwarf with TK,
log , plus an accretion belt with TK covering 27% of
the white dwarf surface with V km/s. The accretion belt
contributes 63% of the FUV light and the cooler white dwarf latitudes
contribute 37%. This fit yields a distance of 351 pc which is within 100 pc of
our adopted distance of 450 pc. EY Cyg has very weak C {\sc iv} emission and
very strong N {\sc v} emission, which is atypical of the majority of dwarf
novae in quiescence. We also conducted a morphological study of the
surroundings of EY Cyg using direct imaging in narrow nebular filters from
ground-based telescopes. We report the possible detection of nebular material^M
associated with EY Cygni. Possible origins of the apparently large N {\scv}/C
{\sc iv} emission ratio are discussed in the context of nova explosions,
contamination of the secondary star and accretion of nova abundance-enriched
matter back to the white dwarf via the accretion disk or as a descendant of a
precursor binary that survived thermal timescale mass transfer. The scenario
involving pollution of the secondary by past novae may be supported by the
possible presence of a nova remnant-like nebula around EY Cyg.Comment: To appear in AJ, Oct. 2004. 5 figures, including 2 color ones (2D

The serendipituous discovery of a short-period eclipsing polar in 2XMMp
We report the serendipituous discovery of the new eclipsing polar 2XMMp
J131223.4+173659. Its striking X-ray light curve attracted immediate interest
when we were visually inspecting the source products of the 2XMMp catalogue.
This light curve revealed its likely nature as a magnetic cataclysmic variable
of AM Herculis (or polar) type with an orbital period of ~92 min, which was
confirmed by follow-up optical spectroscopy and photometry. 2XMMp
J131223.4+173659 probably has a one-pole accretion geometry. It joins the group
of now nine objects that show no evidence of a soft component in their X-ray
spectra despite being in a high accretion state, thus escaping ROSAT/EUVE
detection. We discuss the likely accretion scenario, the system parameters, and
the spectral energy distribution.Comment: Accepted for publication in A&
